2015 - September 7th - Abbey section of the Loughborough SAS

Practice day on the Abbey section of the Loughborough AS.

I chose peg 3 and it looked to be the most accessible as My friend , Mick and i walked the whole field and agreed the other 9 pegs will need quite a lot of work to get them to a safe and fair level.

The water was really gin clear and the early morning sun gave way to cloudier conditions which suited us both . I started by placing small nuggets of SENSAS 300 lake and Super Black with dead maggot at 3-4 metres and kept the far side free from G/Bait and i only sprayed caster with maggot on the hook but i also sprayed maggot sometimes as the larger Perch were up for the free offerings

Rigs were a MAURIZIO SCHIEPATTI SIRIO 0,5 gr , 0.12/0.10 - ......starting with 18's hook but then onto a 16 . Minnows and small Bleak were a nuisance and best was to use double caster or three maggots which i did when on 16's hook. Average depth was about 5'-6'' .
I had 7 Good Perch 14oz to 1.5lb size and many Dace and Roach of good 4-6oz size that was complimented with a lot of chublettes. I had no larger chub on the day but i was pestered by the Pike at the net and played sword fighting with them all day with my landing net pole.
Mick to my left just fed maggot all day and had some nice Perch but in his 8' deep peg he was prone to Pike Attack and hooked several.
The ground bait close in was a mistake as it attracted many small fish shadowed by Pike so any fish i caught in the G/B free zone became targets when playing in.
If i could fish that again i would have just pinged hemp and caster all day and fished 16 m tight to far bank on worm for any marauding Chub.

One of several hooked by Mick and o owned up to just 2.

long line and 14m pole or 16m pole and tight to far bank

Nice catch be it hard work.

The Abbey will have one section and it requires much work but if you are up for a few hours work then the organisers of the WL welcome you . Brian Hull and the Loughborough fishing club combined with the Bennets of Mountsorrel tackle shop have been organising work parties in recent weeks to get the other sections ready for the start . PLEASE HELP !
