2023 - Soar Champs at Sutton Bonnington on the River soar - by Mick Carr

First match since returning from a 2 weeks fishing holiday in Sweden with Phil . Looking forward to see all the lads as the social side of fishing in Leicestershire leagues and opens is just the best

The HQ and Breakfast was the Kings Head at Sutton

Soon the Pub started to fill with Breakfast smells in the air

Great atmosphere

My Peg 15 from the playing fields end

My Catch , a very hard earned one on a typical awkward Soar

Great report of results by HOTFISHIN'

This prestigious Cup has made it to the Greensmith trophy cabinet

My Report of this eventful day :

24th September 2023 River Soar Championship. This match normally is fished end of March but river was in flood and cancelled. Due to the match calendar being full the only date available was 24th. Sutton Bonnington stretch split into 2. Soar lane and playing fields. We all met at Kings Head in Sutton Bonnington for breakfast, a good chat and the draw. I drew peg 15 playing fields. Never fished that peg but lads told me small fish were there but i want bigger. Got to peg and very clear. Wind downstream but not too bad although by 2ish it was gusting. Decided on 3 lines. Feeder far side, flat float at 9mtrs and 2gram float on top of near shelf which was 6ft deep. A foot further out it dropped away. Baitdropped casters, choppie, hemp mixed with dryish groundbait to give a light cloud. Did not use dark gb. Well it seemed to work as 6 small perch and a solitary small roach in first hour or so. Also dropped 2 as they were just holding on to the small worm i was using and of course a couple of missed bites. Then it went dead so out on feeder and had 5 x 2minutes casts to look for bites but basically to get feed down. Switched to flat float pinned to bottom as not enough flow really but gave it up as not really working. Back on inside line and caught a couple more but feeder was calling. So many savage quick bites or little tremors. Could not hit them. Done my head in but talking afterwards it was the same for most. Only had 1 proper bite which resulted in my best perch of just over a pound. At the weigh in i had 1lb 14oz which was second in section beaten by Andy on next peg 14 with 2lb 5oz. It was hard but enjoyable. Back to pub. Guiness flowed and the laughs started. The camaraderie at these events is special and long may it continue. Will be back for the next champs but this weekend is the start of the Soar Valley Winter League or SVWL and looking forward to that. We need rain to add a bit of colour but looking at forecast we are not going to get much so could be another low weight match for most but this river has a habit of suddenly switching on so a surprise could be on the cards.

See you all on the SVWL next week when 9 teams of 10 are active on the river soar again.

2023 - September 11th Trosa

Ide like to fish the weir at Trosa where i have had so many great sessions.

My office for the day

Started at 9-10m and first three put-ins yielded 3 Ide all about 1.5 kilo each , what a start ! Later i caught more Perch at 5-6m pole feeder.

Hauled the heavy net up

8 Ide in the end - approx 10/11 kilos , 2 of them was at least 2 kilos each (4-5lb )

At least 40 Perch as they were insane today taking on corn and worm - approx 15 kilos with 10 or so Roooaaaaach !

Cracking day and plenty of action .

Will i join next year ? For me the Trosa must change ideas :

- Stop this ridiculous close season Sept 14th till December 31st (best time to fish !)

- Stop this ridiculous Traditional match once a year when 125 kilos of fish were murdered !

- Do the two above then your membership will grow twice as much !

2023 - September 6th Trosa

Decided to fish Trosa before the end of its ridiculous close season starting on September 14th !?!?!?

We both fished feeder and i fish a pole also at 9m

Mick caught a procession of good Perch and Hybrids and Bjorkna with quite a lot of Roooooooach !

At the weigh in (without scales) estimated Mick had 12/13 kilos and i was about 10 kilos .

Opposite the Bohmans Hotel

One happy chappy

That was it , the last of the fishing so the 'SUTTON SLAYER' is ready for home

That evening we visited the local Greek restaurant

Mick posing with his latest tattoo based on his fave group ; 'Night wish'

He orders the best in Greek food

Getting stuck in

Thursday was a day off but we invited our good friend Eva Randen 1/4 of the ABBA revival group 😂😂😂😂

From Eva to Mick as a going home present

2023 - Sodertalje Canal 5th September - Bream bashing with Mick

After our trip to Karlstad we had a rest day but on the Tuesday we fished the canal only 400 metres from my residence . Mick Carr aka 'The Perch whisperer' was bagging on his favourite Swedish venue Top 6 fishing .

The Perch Whisperer also known as the 'Triple L' ( Link Ledger Legend) also know as 'Badoosh'

The night before Carola made a treat for Mick with Crayfish (Krafter) so we had a crayfish party  (Kräftskiva)

Snaps ....... of course !

Beautiful place to fish

18 kilos for Mick for 5 hours fishing

19 kilos for me for 5 hours fishing

2023 - September 2nd/3rd - DEJE Feeder festival (transferred to a lake because of flooded river)

Best friend Michael Carr from UK came over for 2 weeks , we have been friends since 11 years of age and on this trip he was to experience a Swedish fishing competition.

Mikael Nyman - excellent human and great environmentalist , good angler and the man behind the METMASK empire with Russell Hopkins who is the best bait supplier and his quality is born out through bait care before it gets to the purchaser . In fact Mick Carr said his quality bait is equivalent to UK shops , if not better !!

Organiser and top man of this years DEJE event ........front man with Russell Hopkins for METMASK selling MATRIX , PRESTON , GARBOLINO , DRENNAN, LORPIO, KORUM, FOX, SENSAS.

All below sold under Metmask , Swedens best supplier of bait

DAY 1 and travel to our base camp at FRYKENBADENS Camping site - excellent place !

However Tuesday travel was interrupted abruptly as i would take Carola to work at her school but a bad driver crashed into the side of our car after seemingly falling asleep at the wheel !!! . What a shock and this person raced away nearly hitting further cars behind us . It happened so quick we had no chance of recording the car registration number . We did have a car stop and give us his details to witnessing this event. ........... so not the best start to our fishing trip !

.............Along the way we decided to look at Arboga to view the temperament of the river

Certainly the water was well up but it was running respectively clear - potential to fish in coming weeks we thought ? did we ?

Onwards to the camp site and with food and a few drinks we were well rested for the days coming events . (Yesterdays Pizza left-overs were consumed with some light beers )

Lovely friendly camp site with Permanent and semi-permanent visitors.

These new Stuga's are first class accommodation ...........fully kitted out with toilet and shower , kitchen include hob , fridge , dishwasher , micro and plenty of utensils . Double Bed was great .

Outside was well populated with veranda furniture

Day 2 and our first fishing on the river Klarelven a stretch of river i had previously fished two years ago. However this trip had seen the cancellation of the feeder match at Deje as the river carried too much water but this was still nice to fish and have Mick fish it for the first time.

Leicester City FC on tour

Mick enjoying!

Excellent fishing and taking up 5 kilos of Dace , Roach , Bjorkna on 60gr feeder

Not easy fishing but with 90gr feeders he had a few kilos out

Day 3 and we fished the lake about 11km North at Fryken and Mikael Nyman purchased two day tickets for us

Having visited this part of the lake previous evening we immediately found two comfortable positions however we were shocked to see that the feeder fell in 2 seconds and that was some 45m out !!!

Before we both got the kit ready we cast out a few times to see if any weed collected then we went out with feed and bait on hook and on third cast i caught a Bream of about 1.75 kilos .........we are in ? are we not ?

Car to the peg for both of us

Then Mick had a Bream first cast !!!

Our expectancy was high for more however it all slowed down which was incredibly strange as it took me 30 minutes to get my next Bream and several roach .

Beautiful view to fish in

Mick 'Badoosh' had a solitary Bream and lost one .........expectancy let-down, oh well , that is fishing.

Well after about 4 hours of trying our fish count was very low indeed . Mick had one fish that broke him? and a few roach and i only had three Bream and about 6 roach ..........it was very poor considering the start .

Thursday evening back at the camp site and we frequented the restaurant and pub

Views across the lake were magnificent

Well stocked bar with great beers and wines

What a view

Well populated for excellent service and food .

Day 4 and we decided stay local and actually fish the camp site jetty .

Mr Badoosh !

Not a bad session considering it took 30 minutes before the first indication of fish feeding but in the end i had some 50-60 roach and 2 strange looking fish plus a bonus Ide.

Caught two of these (sorry not the best view)

We believe they are Sik - The Caudal fin looks to be that of a Sik but you cannot see the adipose fin in this picture .

Friday night was meeting night for the competitors and we were 5 at least could make it (Mick and i already on the site )

DAY 5 and first day of competition at the re-arranged venue of P-O's pond .........mosquitoes everywhere and the bank to sit on was not the best so i actually did not want to fish it however i did change my mind after .

Phil Roberts

Per-Erik

Mick Carr

Russ 'North Ben Dover ' Hopkins

Swedish ice fishing champion (his wife also) , terrific guy is Per

Mikael at the weigh-in

10.700 for me

Fellow Leicester man Phil Roberts from Norway with only Tench of the day

Again , we 5 were back at the Pub/Restaurant drinking copious amounts of wine (just me ) and a few beers and the food was awesome !!

Day 6 and last day of competition

End of 5 hours fishing and the weigh-in commenced

P-0 with his best fish

2nd on day with 15.5 kilos

This is the problem that when you work with Russ Hopkins things become a little perverse 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Oral sex with Bream can only get slimey 🙈

Mikael has grown 'Spock' Bream ears

The days winner with 19 kilos is Per

Better day for Mick with 4 kilos and caught a Bream

Hopefully next year we can get back on the river at Deje pending not the same wet season we have endured this year !!!

I shall go back to FRYKENBADEN camping site as it was truly a great place to stop with so many different nationalities and friendly staff .
